UFC 93 Numbers are in…..9,369 attendees for $1.3 million gate

“UFC 93: Henderson vs. Franklin,” which took place Jan. 17 at the O2 Arena in Dublin, Ireland drew a sold-out crowd of 9,369 spectators for a live gate of $1.3 million.

It currently unknown how many, if any, of the total attendance received complimentary tickets for the show.

The UFC announced the figures for the organization’s first trip to the Republic of Ireland following Saturday night’s event.

The gate pales in comparison to the organization’s recent $3.4 million draw at UFC 92, and $4.8 million take at UFC 91 — both held in Las Vegas — but the organization has already announced plans for a return to the O2 Arena. The UFC shared its intentions to return to Dublin in 2010, citing a possible St. Patrick’s Day event.

While U.S. crowds typically trump the Dublin attendance figure by several thousand attendees, it would be hard to imagine a crowd more boisterous than that in attendance for Saturday’s pay-per-view event.

The Irish faithful cheered loudly and often, and traditional football — or soccer, if you must — chants of “Ole, Ole” permeated the arena on several occasions. The experience was overwhelming for “The Irish Hand Grenade” Marcus Davis, who found it difficult to contain his emotions following his “Fight of the Night” victory over Chris Lytle.

“It’s rare that anybody gets an opportunity to fulfill a dream, and I’ve been able to do it two times now,” Davis said. “To come in here and beat Chris Lytle 100 miles from where my family is from, Waterford, Ireland, I’ve just got to than God for this opportunity — God and the UFC.”

Antonio Silva sues the California State Athletic Commission

Suspended fighter Antonio Silva filed a civil action against the California State Athletic Commission on Jan. 7 in Los Angeles Superior Court, the first known case in which a mixed martial artist has legally contested a CSAC decision outside the state regulatory body.

Silva is asking for a “writ of mandate,” or a ruling from the court that will supersede the CSAC’s decision to suspend the fighter for one year for alleged steroid use and possibly allow Silva another hearing to try and prove his innocence.

Bisping to be coach on Ultimate Fighter Season 9

Really not a surprise that Michael Bisping was going to be The Ultimate Fighter 9 coach as he’s known as the “face of MMA in the UK”. TUF9 is set to feature UK fighters against their US counterparts. Bisping will naturally coach the team of fighters from England as Dana White announced Saturday night. Bisping, the winner of TUF3 at 205, has recently dropped to 185 where he looked comfortable in his decision win over Chris Leben tonight at UFC 89.

There has been no announcement on who will coach the US team for TUF9 however both Rich Franklin and Dan Henderson being rumored as possibilities.

Video: Kimbo TKO’d by Seth Petruzelli

Ken Shamrock was injured warming up for his Saturday night bout with Kimbo Slice and had to back out of the fight leaving EliteXC’s Saturday Night Fights without a main event. Seth Petruzelli, a relative unknown fighter with some UFC experience, was scheduled to fight on the same card and was offered to move up to the main event and face Kimbo about 40 minutes before the first televised fight was to air. Both Petruzelli and Slice accepted the fight. After 14 seconds Petruzelli shocked the world and Kimbo was TKO’d! We happen to think it was the best thing for MMA! Watch for yourself.
